Determination of the composition of FAME from C14:0 to C18:3 in Jet Fuels

The presence of trace amounts of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) in jet fuel can change the properties of the fuel and subsequently cause problems for aircraft engines. FAME can be introduced into jet fuel during transportation or storage, and are typically contamination from biofuels present or handled in refineries. In order to ensure safety, aviation fuels cannot contain more than 50 ppm/weight FAME, according to ASTM D1655 and DEFSTAN 91-91.

The AC Analytical Controls® AVTUR FAME analyzer is specifically designed for routine analysis by refineries, distribution and pipeline companies, independent laboratories, airlines, the military, or any other organization needing to measure FAME content in jet fuel.
The gas chromatography solution is based on the Agilent 8890 GC platform, whose intelligent features increase system productivity and help reduce analysis costs, and uses a unique combination of Deans switching and a refocusing module that eliminates the need for cryogenic fluids.
The applied technology allows cycle times to be reduced to less than 1 hour and the optional autosampler allows continuous operation (24/7).

Features and Benefits:

  • Analyzes a wide range of FAME concentrations
  • Handles a wide range of aviation turbine (AVTUR) fuels (e.g., contaminated diesel fuel) Excellent detectability, stability, dynamic range, and repeatability at ppm levels
  • Excellent separation and detection limits with a unique refocusing module
  • Eliminates the need for cold trap cryogenics (system uses only air)
  • Complies with proposed method: IP PM EL (Heart cut GC)
  • Automates method-specific reporting capabilities
  • Easy to use: no sample preparation required
  • Eliminates the need for expert intervention with factory setup.

Complies with methods: IP599, ASTM D1655, and DEFSTAN 91-91.
